The fashion industry has always been about coming up with new materials to make clothes. Some of the most popular ones are cotton, denim, and spandex.
Recently, polyester has become an increasingly popular option for fashion designers because it is cheaper than spandex and it breathes better than cotton.
So what material is best? Spandex or polyester? Is one better than the other? can you wear spandex in the pool? Here are some pros and cons of each material that you should know before making your decision on which type of fabric to use when designing your next clothing item.
Spandex Vs Polyester Which Is Better
Spandex is a stretchy, synthetic material that is used in most leotards and swimsuits. You can even find it on some athletic clothing and yoga pants so you can see just how versatile this fabric is. Spandex has many benefits but also has its downsides as well.
On the plus side, spandex allows for more freedom of movement than polyester which makes it perfect to use when designing clothes like dance costumes or workout wear since your body will be able to move without any restrictions from the garment itself.
Another benefit of using spandex over cotton or other fabrics is that it dries much faster after being washed because water simply falls off the surface instead of soaking into the fibers of the material.
On top of that, spandex is more elastic than most other fabrics so it will keep its shape much longer and not stretch out over time which can be important when you consider how expensive some leotards or dance costumes are, to begin with.
Furthermore, this fabric does an excellent job at wicking away moisture from your skin which makes for a very comfortable experience while wearing clothes made with spandex like yoga pants or workout shirts.
However, there are also downsides associated with using spandex in clothing designs as well. For one thing, depending on what type of apparel is being made (for example activewear versus sleepwear) different types of materials may make more sense since they each have their distinct benefits.
One of the biggest downfalls to using spandex is how it does not stretch well in one direction so any seams or hems that are sewn into a garment made with this fabric will lose their elasticity over time and may rip if they are stressed too much.

Because of these concerns, many fashion designers have been turning away from spandex as an option lately because polyester has become available at such cheap prices which makes it more cost-effective overall for mass production runs on clothing items.
In addition to the issues with seam strength, some people do experience skin irritations on occasion when wearing clothes made out of spandex due to allergies since this type of fiber uses plasticizers during its manufacturing process while polyester does not.
Polyester is a synthetic fiber that is also referred to as “polythene” or “thermoplastic olefin” (TPO). It was introduced into the textile industry in 1955 and has been increasing in popularity ever since due to its low cost, durability, easy laundering, and resistance to stains which makes it great for activewear clothing pieces.
Even though this fabric used to be stiffer than spandex when polyester first came out on the scene, today there are many varieties of it available even though most people still think all types of polyester feel exactly alike.
Another benefit associated with using polyester for your next fashion design project is how inexpensive it can be compared to spandex.
For example, polyester is much less expensive to produce because it does not tear when cut during the manufacturing process like spandex can which means that more fabric can be used in each production run without drastically increasing costs for clothing brands who are purchasing this material to make their products.
On top of being inexpensive, polyester also has many benefits over cotton and other natural fibers since it will retain its shape well even after multiple washes so you won’t have to worry about your workout tops or leotards losing their stretchiness throughout time either.
This type of synthetic material will also keep moisture away from skin better than cotton or most other fabrics so people wearing clothes made with polyester do tend to feel a lot cooler and more comfortable overall.
However, there are a few downsides to using polyester in your design projects as well which is why some fashion designers tend to lean towards spandex instead of this material when they make their clothing items.
For one thing, the types of clothes that look best with polyester designs tend to be activewear pieces like yoga pants or workout shirts because it doesn’t work very well for dresses and other garments that you would see on someone who is simply walking around town doing errands or maybe going out on the weekends since these articles do not need stretchiness at all times.
Another downside associated with using polyester fabrics is how much heat this type of synthetic fiber builds up if it gets wet so people who sweat a lot or have to wear their workout clothes in hot, humid weather can experience skin irritations from this type of fabric as well.
In the end, there are many benefits and drawbacks associated with choosing either polyester or spandex for your apparel design projects so it is best to weigh all options carefully before deciding which material you want to use when investing in clothing items that will be worn by customers daily.
While both materials do have their own sets of advantages and disadvantages, depending upon what type of work you’re doing (for example activewear versus sleepwear) may determine whether using one material over another makes more sense since they each come with different pros and cons.
Can You Wear Spandex In The Pool?
Yes, you can wear spandex in the pool. It is not recommended though for several reasons. For one, most pools have chemicals that are very harsh on your skin and fabric which may cause deterioration of clothing or damage to color.
For another thing, tight-fitting clothes such as spandex typically do not dry as easily as other types of swimsuits like board shorts or bikini bottoms.
If you leave them wet for a length of time they could mildew if the environment is right (moisture and dark).
Also, it tends to make your body colder because water conducts heat away from our bodies about 25 times faster than air does (i.e., think diving into ice-cold water after sitting in a hot tub).
The last reason is that it’s not the most flattering look for swimming you are likely to get more of a workout pulling yourself out of the water while wearing spandex because it clings tightly to your body.
Not only could this make you tired sooner, but it also makes swimming harder to do. If you want something form-fitting for swimming, I would recommend nylon or lycra which are both fabrics that are designed specifically for swimming and will dry quickly if they do get wet.

What Happens If I Wear Spandex And Not Sunscreen?
If you wore spandex without any sunscreen protection, eventually you would end up with severe sunburns on the areas that were covered by spandex because those areas didn’t receive any protection from UV Rays (sunlight).
As we mentioned before, Spandex is made of elastic fabric and is tight-fitting, which means that it doesn’t allow the skin to breathe and thus doesn’t give any protection from harmful UV Rays.
For areas of the body like your legs, where you may be wearing spandex shorts without any sunscreen applied, you will likely get sunburned if you are in direct sunlight for more than 15 minutes.
If you buy clothes that are made of spandex material (such as yoga pants), it is recommended to buy clothes that have a UPF Rating (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) on them like the Mott 50 or Mott 100 level.
The higher number indicates how much ultraviolet light is blocked by the fabric. For example; A shirt with a rating of 50 will block about 97% of UV light, whereas a shirt with a rating of 100 will block about 98% of the ultraviolet light.
If you are wearing Yoga pants or shorts made of spandex material, make sure to also put sunscreen on your legs because they won’t be protected by the spandex clothing.
Can I Wear Yoga Pants To Swim
Yes, you can wear yoga pants to swim. Yoga pants and other workout clothes are meant to be worn in wet conditions and can generally handle a little water. Keep in mind that the fabrics will probably absorb some water and could feel heavier than usual.
You might want to avoid wearing jeans to swim as they don’t dry easily so it could weigh your body down, but yoga pants could be fine especially if you’re swimming at night when they would have time to dry off again before morning/daytime.
Can you wear spandex in the pool? I hope you got an answer. Remember Spandex is a popular choice for swimwear, but you should know that it does not hold up well in chlorine-filled pools and can cause unpleasant rashes on your skin.
If this may be the case, then polyester fabric will likely serve as a better fit. Polyester suits are more durable and last longer than spandex suits; they also dry faster which means less time spent waiting around before getting back to enjoying the water.
The good news is there’s no need to give up on wearing those cute little bikinis or one-pieces just yet because many of them offer both options so you’re sure to find something perfect for your next pool outing. We hope this blog post has been helpful and that you have a better idea of what to wear in the water.
